Wacky Racers 2012/13 Race 1

4.1 Mile Handicap

Thursday 18/10/2012

Well done to everyone that ran tonight!!

I thought that was a tough but very enjoyable 4.1 miles. A great turnout and a fantastic night for a run. And wasn't it great to see the fantastic Andy King whizzing past at a quite astonishing pace? Mind you, Connor wasn't far off that pace either. Thats part of why I love handicap races - you get to see runners in action towards the end that would normally be well out of sight within a few minutes.

Everyone did a really great job. I knew the bonus points were going to be pretty hard to come by and I was surprised to see as many awarded as there were.

I particularly thought Glenn did a great job as his target was pretty tough, being based on a 2 miler I sneakily found that he'd done at a much quicker pace than the 10k I think he was expecting me to use (sorry Glenn).

Massive thanks to Jim & Lorraine for a great job - apologies if my explanations of what to do were a bit garbled.

Note that at first glance the bonus points awards may look a little odd. The bandings are based on a percentage of time, so are narrower for the faster runners.

Next Wacky Race will be a 5k. Its possible to use the Age Graded Percentages (AGP) to predict 5k times assuming similar terrain. This is how that looks:

You may have noticed I like to use Age Grading Percentages. This is how Runners' World describes them:

EXPLANATION

Your age-graded score is the ratio of the approximate world-record time for your age and gender divided by your actual time.  Age-graded scores have been categorized into these broad achievement levels:

100% = Approximate World Record Level
Over 90% = World Class
Over 80% = National Class
Over 70% = Regional Class
Over 60% = Local (club) Class

Note, though, that this is only a very rough guide.

So some top Regional Class and even National Class running tonight along with some superb efforts from our newer runners and everyone in between. I really hope the series will continue to provide something for everyone and encourage any and all runners and would-be runners to come along.

In the first run, some runners may have had a tougher target than others depending on times over the year, but that should even out over the series.

Here's a sneak preview of how targets may look for the next race:

As you may have spotted, there is a 'Ruairi the Nasty' loading on the first 3 home that will make the rest of their series that little bit tougher. Spare a thought for poor Andy - at this rate he'll need to pull out World Class times to Podium for a Wacky Race!

10 bonus points should continue to be a tough ask. I for one would need to get a PB to get the full ten. Anyone that can generally keep their AGP %ages consistent or creep them up a tad will be doing well.

Next Wacky Race is in November - see you there!!!
