Massive congratulations to SRAC's Jenny MacTaggart and Donnie Macleod who have been announced as Lewis and Harris Sports Council's 2013 under 18 and over 18 Sports Persons of the Year after their Island Games achievements!
In her senior debut at the Bermuda Island Games, 16 year old Jenny truly stepped up to the mark, with fine individual runs, confounding expectation and reaching the 100m and 200m women's finals, and running a phenomenal lead off leg in the 4 x 400m women's relay. Running the distance for the first ever time and running a 400m relay for the first time ever, Jenny ran a truly stunning leg – with a ‘split’ time that would have had her challenging for a medal in the individual race - she pushed the Bermuda athlete who was leading all the way to the line to hand the baton over in a very close second place. The quartet went on to take a surprise bronze medal – the icing on the cake on what was a phenomenal season for Jenny!
Meanwhile Donnie, an Island Games veteran at 26, and in his 5th games - and after back to back silvers in the last 2 games - took a fantastic 800m gold with a breath-taking long sprint from home taking the race on from 230m out ! It was a tactic that proved decisive as Donnie’s renowned kick proved too strong for the rest of the field as he crossed the line with an emphatic win! Donnie also took a silver in the 400m.
The Western Isles Island Games Squad were named as team of the year after their record breaking medal haul in Bermuda! Well done all!
