Wacky Races 2018/19

Hey guys! It’s that time of year again for the Wacky Races to begin. Myself (Murdo A.) and Norman Ferguson are taking over this year from Peter Macinnes and Spike Macintosh. So a big thanks to them for setting up the races over the past few years. The first race will be on Thursday 25th October meeting at the Lews castle (museum carpark) from 5.15pm for first runner off at 5.40pm. Unlike previous years the first race will be a 5km. See the link for the course details: We will run the race clockwise.

The Wacky Races are a series of mostly 5k handicap races that take place in the Castle grounds or streets of Stornoway over the winner. In a handicap race it is possible for anyone to win! With slower runners setting off first and the fastest last the aim is that everyone finishes roughly at the same time. Your start time is based on your best recent 5 or 10k times. Points are awarded to everyone depending on what place they finish in each races and at the end of the series the person with the most points will get the hallowed Wacky Race shield. The aim is to have fun, some good banter and try to improve your 5k times!

If you plan to come along can you email with your name and most recent 5km or 10km time?

This year we’ve decided to change the entry fee to a charity donation. We’ve decided to raise some money for the Western Isles Association for Mental Health ( ). We’ve set up a fund raising page so please pay £2 before every race on At the end of the series the grand total will be donated to the charity.

Hopefully we’ll get a great turnout for race 1! 🙂

The Wacky rules for this years are:

  • Your best 4 out of 6 performances will count towards your final score. So you can afford miss two or wipe off two low scoring performances
  • Points will be awarded depending on your finishing place
  • The three runners finishing closest to their predicted times will be given bonus points
  • There will also be a bonus for doing all six races!
